Question
Is an aquaponics system using goldfish or koi fish more efficient when growing basil?
hypothesis
If using an aquaponics system with koi fish, basil will grow better.
variables
Independent Variable: Type of fish (Koi fish vs. Goldfish)
Dependent Variable: Speed of growth and height of the basil plant
Control Variable: Type of plant, Type of aquaponics setup, light source

materials
2 20 gallon tanks
5 goldfish
5 koi fish
2 water pumps
2 9 watt (daylight) lamps
2 grow beds
clay beads
Goldfish food
Koi fish food
2 oxygen pumps
4 packs of basil seed

data collection
The height of the basil plants will be measured every week. The data will be presented in line graphs showing the differences in the speed of growth between the 2 aquaponics set ups. The pH, amount of Ammonia, Nitrate and Nitrite will be measured and compared as well. Data will be analyzed by comparing the growth of the basil plants in each aquaponics system to each other to see if there is a difference in the speed of growth.
energy dynamic
We believe the producers will take at least 50% of the energy produced by the fish. The consumers will use at most 50% of the energy produced. Consumers and producers can lose energy through poop and many other natural processes.
literary review
"Of which, 1.5 l min−1 can be suggested as optimum water flow rate for the growth of spinach and koi carp in aquaponic system as percentage weight gain in fish, percentage height gain, and yield of plants were higher compared to flow rates 3.2 and 1.0 l min−1."
